About randomizing pages and questions

  • Randomize pages in a questionnaire and questions on a page to:
    • Show pages and/or questions in different order to eliminate the order bias.
    • Assign a few pages and/or questions to each participant to limit study length and make sure the study is completed.
  • Unlike task randomization, question and page randomization is not auto-balanced and is completely random. This causes some questions to get more answers than others.
  • Randomization when adding new questions or pages:
    • Adding new questions/pages or reordering the existing ones resets randomization settings.
    • Make these changes to your questionnaire before applying randomization.
  • Combining logic and conditions with randomization can cause unexpected behaviors in the flow of your study.

Randomize pages in a questionnaire

  1. Go to the Study Builder section of your study.
  2. Select the task/questionnaire.
  3. Click Randomize Pages randomize_pages.jpg at the top right above all the pages (only available when there are two or more pages on the questionnaire).
  4. The overlay window that appears shows you all pages with no randomization enabled. You can do any of the following:
    • Add a new block:
      1. Click the Add Block button.
      2. Drag and drop pages for the new block below the last page of the previous block.
    • Randomize pages in a block: Check Random Pages to randomize all pages in the block.
    • Assign to All: Select Assign to All so each participant sees all the pages in a block.
    • Assign to a specific number:  Select Assign to a specific number so each participant randomly sees your chosen number of pages from the block.
  5. Click Save.
