About setting up your account
- After creating your login credentials, log in at app.usertesting.com to access the default home Dashboard.
- The Dashboard displays your tests and drafts as you create them.
Navigation menu
- The navigation menu is where you can organize:
- Tests and test drafts
- Workspaces
- Folders
- Template library
- Contributor Networks
- Highlight reels
- Our best practice recommendation is to create a naming convention for all of these components of your account.
- This will help you seamlessly scale your testing, even as new members join your team and begin testing.
- Assign the Admin role to someone responsible for maintaining naming conventions and keeping the account organized for better productivity as testing grows.
Workspaces
- Workspaces help teams collaborate and organize testing efforts in a dedicated space.
- There are public, private, or hidden workspaces to control access.
Workspaces enable you to...
- Improve the organization of your templates, tests, and team members
- Assign and maintain privacy for projects or teams
- Assign permission capabilities at a per-workspace level
As your plan for Workspaces, consider:
- Do certain teams need their Workspaces on the account to easily manage their list of tests?
- Do certain projects need to be in their own Workspace because they will involve multiple tests?
Naming conventions
- Establish a consistent naming convention for tests, Workspaces, and Highlight Reels as a best practice to improve identification and searchability.
- There's no right or wrong way to name things as long as the names help you find what you need quickly and efficiently.
- Many customers name tests based on factors like creation date, method, or team involvement.
Here are some aspects to consider when creating naming conventions:
- Fiscal quarter
- Project name
- Shortened form of project goal (e.g. Why_Cart_Abandonment)
- Team members
- Team member roles
- Date
- Kind of test (Live Conversation, Unmoderated, etc.)
- Type of feedback sought
- Any term that is helpful to your team
Example structure
Project Name - Research Question - Date - Lead Team Member
Folders
- Folders provide you with an additional layer of organization within a Workspace.
- You can find and manage your folders in the navigation menu.
- Selecting a folder updates the Dashboard to display all tests, drafts, and highlight reels within it.
- You can apply the same naming conventions used for Workspaces here.
- You can add a folder description for extra context.
- Use the "..." menu on the folder page to edit it.
Templates
- Templates are pre-built test plans that UserTesting has designed with industry best practices in mind.
- Your team can also build your own Templates to share with people on your account.
- Templates provide a head start on test planning with pre-written, editable questions tailored to your team's needs.
- We recommend naming templates based on the test's purpose and/or target audience.
- Example: Why they don’t use the voice command app feature_25-50 year olds_New York City
Templates are divided into:
- UserTesting Templates (the full library of all Templates we have built)
- Account Templates (Templates you have saved to be used by anyone on your account)
- Personal Templates (Templates you have saved to be used by yourself on your personal Workspace within your account)
Contributor Networks
- Your Contributor Networks are the groupings of those Contributors who respond to your tests.
- The UserTesting Contributor Network includes over 1.5 million global participants ready to respond to your tests.
- The Favorite Contributor Network is made up of your preferred Contributors from the UserTesting Contributor Network.
- A Custom Network is a group you create by inviting your colleagues, customers, friends, or others to test through UserTesting.
When naming Contributor Networks, use terms that help you easily identify them:
- Who is part of the network
- The purpose of the network
- Example: Customers unfamiliar with our brand, ages 18-35.
Highlight reels
- Highlight Reels are videos made from selected clips of Contributor recordings, typically showcasing common themes in feedback.
- For example, a Highlight Reel might feature three clips of Contributors sharing feedback on why they like your new website redesign.
- When naming Highlight Reels, use terms that identify their content without needing to rewatch them.
- To help keep video clips organized, we recommend using hashtags.
- Using a hashtag (#) plus a name for a video clip (e.g., #voicefeatureapp) will help clips remain useful and efficient for grouping common themes.
- This helps you create Highlight Reels faster and organizes clips by tag when exporting to an Excel spreadsheet from the Summary tab in your test results.
Here are some aspects to consider when creating naming conventions:
- Who are the Contributors (e.g. “New customers”)
- The overall sentiment they express (e.g. “Positive feedback re: web redesign”)
- The name of the test or major goal/question (e.g. “Why web redesign losing customers”)
