Create a test with templates (UserTesting)

Use these steps to create a test on the UserTesting platform with a template designed by our research experts.

About templates

  • UserTesting templates are contained in the Template gallery.
  • Templates are created and curated by UserTesting for a variety of subjects, device types, and industries.
  • UserTesting templates are available for all customers.  
  • As a best practice, conduct a dry run of your study to ensure you're gathering the insights you need.

Create a test with a template

  1. Click Create test from the UserTesting dashboard, then select Customize a template.
  2. From the Template gallery, use the filters and categories to search for a template that meets your needs.
  3. Select any template tile to see more information, including a test plan preview that displays all the tasks already populated in the template.

  4. Click Use this template to begin customizing the test plan.
  5. Select your asset type and how you want to invite participants. Then, click Next.

  6. When customizing your test plan from the template, you'll choose:
    1. The number of participants you are seeking for this test
    2. The desired demographics, or characteristics, of the participants
    3. The devices and operating system that you want the participants to use
      Note: Some templates have pre-built audiences available for your use. The screener questions typically have [fill-in-the-blank] sections annotated with brackets.
  7. Click the Edit button to edit the test plan, including questions, tasks, a scenario, a starting URL, and more.

  8. Make any necessary changes to the Test plan. The tasks and questions in templates are just a starting point. You can revise, remove, or add new tasks and questions.
    Note: There are typically one or multiple [fill-in-the-blank] sections throughout the test plan that will require you to add the specific details of your test. Fill these in with the required phrases and add any additional instructions as necessary for participants to successfully complete the test.
