Templates in the new experience

The new experience lets you save any test (draft or launched) as a template and then reuse it as a starting point for future tests in the workspace. Create templates to speed up test creation and also increase consistency across tests.

About templates

New templates are available for the new test types (Surveys, Interaction tests, and New think-out-loud tests). Classic tests keep their own template system. Unlike classic templates, new templates:

  • include the whole test (both audiences and test plan)
  • offer an editing experience that is almost identical to editing a test

Classic and new templates share the same page in the UserTesting platform, and you can switch between the two through the new/classic toggle at the top of the page. There are two ways to get there:

  • Through the left-hand side navigation under Library > Templates
  • Through the Templates Library option in the Test creation dropdown.

Create a template

Users with creator permissions can turn a draft or a launched test into a template by following the steps below:

  1. From the left-hand side navigation, go to Tests or Drafts.
  2. Locate the test you want to turn into a template and click on the three-dot (...) menu to the right.
  3. Select Save as template from the dropdown.

  4. In the confirmation message that appears at the very top of the page, click the View button.

Clicking the View button will take you to the templates section (Library > Templates), where your template will most probably be the first on the list. Follow the steps under edit your template to:

  • Give it a helpful name that will allow you and your team to find it in the future
  • Remove any specifics (e.g., URLs, etc.) to make the template more generic

Modify a template

Users with creator permissions can modify templates. Modifying a template is very similar to editing a test. Here are the steps to follow:

  1. From the left-hand side navigation, go to Templates (under Library).

Note: The toggle should be set to "New".

  2. Click on the name of the template you want to edit.

  3. Click the Edit button within the highlighted area towards the top of the screen.

  4. Continue with your edits. Changes are auto-saved.

Note: The steps are to make changes to the template itself, not to create a draft that can eventually be launched. To build a test draft based on a template, follow the steps under the "Use an existing template" section below.

Use an existing template

Users with creator permissions can create new tests starting from a template:

  1. Go to Templates. There are two ways to get there:
    • through the left-hand side navigation (Library > Templates)
    • from the Create test button on the dashboard (Create test > Templates Library)

Note: The toggle should be set to "New".

  2. Locate the template you want to use and click on the three-dot (...) menu to the right.
  3. Select the Use template option from the dropdown.

  4. A fully editable draft is created, and you are taken straight to the Test Builder section of the test.
You can edit the newly created test without affecting the template.

Delete a template

Users with creator permissions can delete templates:

  1. From the left-hand side navigation, go to Templates (under Library).

Note: The toggle should be set to "New".

  2. Locate the template you want to use and click on the three-dot (...) menu to the right.
  3. Select the Delete option from the dropdown.

FAQs

Q: Who can create and use templates?
A: For now, creators can create, edit, and manage templates. Viewers can see existing templates, but not edit or use them.

Q: What gets saved into a template?
A: Initially, a template will be an exact duplicate of the test from which it was created, so it will include whatever the source test contained (tasks, questions, audiences including any screener questions, etc.). After creating the template, we recommend that you edit it to make it more generic (e.g. tweak instruction text, delete an audience, etc.).

Q: Where do templates live?
A: Templates exist at the workspace level only. There are no personal or account-level templates at the moment.

Q: Can I look at a template before using it?
A: Yes. Clicking a template opens it in a read-only preview.

Q: What can I do if I need a duplicate in multiple workspaces?
A: At the moment, the same template cannot be shared between workspaces. However, you can duplicate the template and then move the duplicate to another workspace.

Note: Permission requirements that apply to moving tests apply to templates as well.

Q: Can I bring over a template from the classic experience?
A: Not directly. You can create a test from the template and then convert that classic test into a test in the new experience. Then you can turn that test into a template.
