About Click maps

  • Quickly identify which screen elements contributors interacted with the most.
  • Access a detailed list of all interactions contributors had with specific screen elements.
  • Click maps combine data from all contributors into a single, interactive representation.
  • Efficiently analyze interaction patterns from larger groups of contributors.

Accessing Click maps

Click maps will appear on the Metrics tab when:

  • You add blank tasks to tests on desktop sites, web-based prototypes, and mobile websites.
  • Contributors interact with a web page in a Chrome browser, including web-based prototypes.
  • If contributors interact with only one screen, a single-click map is displayed for the task.
  • If contributors interact with multiple screens, multiple click maps are displayed as part of the Interactive Path Flow.

Click maps will not appear if:

  • Contributors interact with a static image hosted on a Google Drive, OneDrive, or similar, including PDFs or images hosted by UserTesting (Image Assets).
  • The test is conducted on a mobile app.
  • The test is conducted using a browser other than Chrome or is conducted with the Invite Network.

💡Note: When using long-scrolling prototype pages and built-in tools such as Invision or Figma, the click positions may be inaccurate once the contributor scrolls the page.

Click map insights

Set up your test for Click map insights

  • Ensure your test includes a prototype or live website that contributors can interact with.
  • Click maps are generated based on interactions with clickable elements on these assets.
  • Create tasks that prompt contributors to click, navigate, or interact with specific elements of the screen.
    • Example: "Click on the menu to explore the options available."

Viewing Click map insights

  1. Navigate to the Metrics tab.
  2. Locate the task to view the Click map.

  3. Alternatively, they will also appear as part of an Interactive Path Flow if the contributor visits multiple screens during a task. Select a screen step to view the click map associated with it.

  • When you look at a click map, you see a picture of the screen contributors interacted with and an overlay with circles.
  • The circles show where contributors interacted with the screen.
  • A table listing all contributors’ interactions with the screen is displayed next to the click map.
  • Smaller circles represent fewer interactions, and larger circles represent more interactions.

  • When you hover over a circle, a popover appears, showing the contributors’ interactions.
  • The contributors’ usernames are highlighted in the table.

  • Select the circle to see a table of contributors’ interactions with the element.
  • Click the play button in each row to watch a video of that contributor’s interaction.

💡 Tip: When you watch the interaction video, you can add a note, make a clip, review the transcript, and see suggested tags, just like you can in the video player.

Sharing insights

There are a few ways in which you can share insights from click maps.

💡Note: This method will share the entire test, not just click maps.
