How do participants get started?

The process starts with an invitation. If a company is interested in your feedback, you’ll receive an email with a link to join their Custom Network. Here’s what happens next:

  1. You sign up by clicking the invitation link and entering your email.
  2. You confirm your registration via an email from UserTesting Support.

  1. You complete your profile with some basic details so you can be matched with relevant tests.

  1. You wait for test invitations—opportunities will start coming your way once you've signed up.

How do participants receive test invitations?

When a test is available for you, you’ll get an email notification or see it appear in your UserTesting dashboard. Because test spots are first-come, first-served, it’s a good idea to check your dashboard regularly.

Sometimes, you may need to answer a few screening questions before being selected for a test. This ensures the company gets feedback from people who match their target audience.

What do the tests involve?

There are two main types of tests you might be invited to take:

Self-Guided Tests

    • You’ll complete a series of tasks on your own, following prompts while sharing your thoughts out loud. Your screen and voice are recorded so the company can understand your experience.

Live Conversations

    • These are one-on-one video interviews with a researcher from the company, conducted over Zoom.

What's it like to take a test?

Tests typically take 15–30 minutes, and your feedback helps shape better experiences for future users. Before starting a test, you’ll want to:

  • Find a quiet space with minimal distractions.
  • Use a headset or microphone to ensure clear audio.
  • Check your internet connection—you’ll need a stable connection with at least 3 Mbps upload speed.
  • Remove any personal information from your screen to maintain privacy.

Speak openly and honestly about your experience.

What happens after a test?

Once you complete a test:

  • Your recording is securely sent to the company for review.
  • The company may highlight parts of your feedback to share with their team.
  • You won’t receive direct feedback, but your insights are valuable in improving products and services.

Is it safe and private?

UserTesting takes privacy seriously. As a participant:

  • Your screen and voice are only recorded during the test—nothing outside of the session is accessed.
  • Companies are not evaluating you personally—they’re focused on learning from your experience.
  • Your recordings are encrypted and can only be viewed by the company conducting the test.

Feel like a test isn’t for you- If you ever feel uncomfortable during a test, you can pause or stop at any time, and your information will not be processed.

What if participants need help?

If you have any questions during the process:

  • The Support Center in your UserTesting dashboard has useful resources.
  • Edison, the Virtual Assistant can provide immediate guidance.

Support tickets can be submitted through Edison for further assistance.
