Understanding your customer's environment and context

Learn how customer environment and context testing lets you capture footage of a contributor’s surroundings or interactions with a product. The UserTesting mobile recorder's beyond-the-device capability records experiences beyond the screen.

What kinds of experiences can I capture?

  • You can ask contributors to show you their surroundings (i.e., living room, kitchen, etc.) or show them interacting with a product (i.e., thermostat, toaster, etc.).
  • Keep in mind that contributors will be handling the phone and will likely be completing the tasks one-handed. 
  • This will also work for voice-interactive devices you may wish to test.
  • Our mobile recorder also allows for customer experience studies such as unboxing and destination studies

 

 

Setting up customer environment and context texting

  1. Create a new App test.
  2. Set up screener questions to ensure you get the right contributors. 

    Examples

    Where are you at the time of this test?

    • Home
    • Work
    • Store
    • Restaurant
    • Friend/Family's home
    • On vacation
    • None of these

    Do you have access to any of these at the time of this test? 

    • Refrigerator
    • TV
    • Artificial intelligence (AI) voice assistant
    • Workout equipment
    • Books
    • Washing machine/dryer
    • None of these

    Are you willing and able to use your device's camera to show your surroundings as part of this test?

    • Yes, I can use my camera to show my surroundings.
    • No, I am not comfortable using my camera.
  3. Incorporate a Camera task.

Note: You can also use the Customer environment and context template found in the Template gallery.

 

 

Customer Environment and Context template

  1. Select Create test dropdown menu and choose Templates Library.
  2. Locate the Customer Environment and Context template and select Use this template.
  3. Choose to test with An app to be able to utilize the Camera task.
  4. Preview or select the template and edit as needed.
