Card sorting types
Choose from the three card sorting types:
- Closed – Also available in the new experience (beta)
- Open
- Hybrid

Create a card sort (integrated)
Watch our walk-through video, or follow the steps below.
Use this Card sorting template or create a test from scratch:
- Click Create test, then Think-out-loud test, then Classic experience.
- Select Website.
- Add your audience.
- In the Starting Instructions section, enter your Starting URL.
Pro Tip: Don't have a specific page you'd like participants to start on? That's ok. Choose the A blank page option.
- Use the Scenario field to add context for your task or any further instructions you feel participants will need.
- Add your Card sort task from the Tasks and questions section.
- Choose your card sort type:
- Closed
- Open
- Hybrid
- Customize your Cards and/or Categories. Note: You must hit Enter after each label to save it.
- Choose to randomize your Cards and/or Categories by checking the randomize box under each category.
- Add instructions, if needed, in the Instruction text box.
Create a classic card sort (ia.usertesting.com)
- Choosing a Classic card sort takes you to UserTesting's card sorting app, ia.usertesting.com.
- Here, you will create your card sort activity and then share a link to the card sort in your test plan.
- This option allows you to add images to your card sort, a feature that is not yet available with the standard Card sort task.

Classic card sorts support the following image types (up to 2MB): .jpg, .png and .gif
To create a classic card sort, follow these steps:
- Click Create test, then Think-out-loud test.
- Select Website.
- Add your audience.
- In the Starting Instructions section, enter your Starting URL.
Pro Tip: Don't have a specific page you'd like participants to start on? That's ok. Choose the A blank page option.
- Use the Scenario field to add context for your task or any further instructions you feel participants will need.
- Add your Classic card sort task from the Tasks and questions section.
- Review the new set of instructions listed under Create card sort.
- Go to ia.usertesting.com.
- Under Test Details, choose your Test Type:
- Closed Card Sorting
- Open Card Sorting
- Hybrid Card Sorting
- Add the name of your test to the Name Your Test box.
- Enter a test description in the Description box.
- Click Advanced Options
to customize the following:
- Restrictions
- Limit to 1 participant per computer
- Allow multiple participants per computer
- Expiration
- Toggle On or Off.
- Set the expiration date when toggled On.
- Project Results
- Private
- Shared
- Restrictions
- Select Save Test Details
to move to the Cards section.
- Enter the information you'd like to appear on each card in the boxes provided.
- Text only: Type the text in the box.
- Need more boxes? Select Add Card
.
- Already have a list of each card you'd like in your test?
- Choose Bulk Input
.
- Paste your card information into the Insert Card Values box.
- Click Fill Card Values

- Choose Bulk Input
- Want to add images as opposed to text?
- Select Show/Hide images input
.
- Click Choose File for each card to find and select the image from your computer.
- Select Show/Hide images input
- Click Save Cards
to move to the Add Categories section.
- Under Categories, enter the label for each of your categories in each box.
- Select Add Category
if you need more category boxes.
- After entering all your categories, click Save Categories
to move to the Publish section.
- Click Publish
at the top right to publish your card sort.
- Copy the public link to your classic card sort.
- Paste the link in the Card sort URL box.
- Add instructions, if needed, in the Instruction text box.
