About transcripts

• Transcripts automatically convert the audio from completed tests into searchable text, letting you review sessions faster without rewatching entire videos.

• Transcripts are available with the following subscriptions:

  Advanced ✓

  Ultimate ✓

  Ultimate+ ✓

  This feature is also available in the Starter edition.

• What you can do with transcripts:
  • Jump to any point in a video by clicking the text in the transcript.
  • Create a video clip by selecting the corresponding section of the transcript.
  • Search for keywords and jump to the corresponding portion of the video.
  • Easily copy direct quotes for reporting and presentations to stakeholders.
• For Live Conversations, transcripts also include each participant's name and label the moderator's contributions separately.

Why use transcripts?

• The Transcripts feature is a great time-saving tool for you to review large batches of videos or quickly scan through videos for insights.
• Transcripts are generated by machine-driven speech recognition and won’t always be 100% accurately captured.
• Use transcripts as a tool to improve efficiency rather than as a substitute for watching user videos.

Available languages in transcripts

Transcript availability depends on your test type:

Note: To run a test in a language other than English, set the language filter when initially building your test.

Important: The UserTesting platform does not translate transcripts, test plans, or participant feedback in any language.

View a transcript

1. Select Tests in the navigation menu on the left.
2. Choose the test you'd like to view.
3. Click Play to open the video.
4. Click the dropdown in the right menu and choose Transcript.
   

Export transcript content

If you need to work with transcript content outside the UserTesting platform, use Exporting Transcripts to Excel to:

• Review participant responses outside the platform
• Search for keywords across sessions
• Share findings with stakeholders

Please note: Transcripts can’t currently be downloaded as standalone text (.txt) files.

Create a video clip from the transcript

1. Follow the steps above to view a transcript.
2. Highlight the text you'd like to turn into a clip.
3. Click Make clip.
   

Navigate the video using the transcript

1. Follow the steps above to view a transcript.
2. In the transcript, click the beginning of any sentence to jump to that point in the video.

Pro tip: User CTRL/CMD+F to search for text in the transcript. Then click the beginning of that sentence to jump to that point of the video.
