Doing tasks and answering questions are the activities participants perform during the test so that you can get answers to your research questions. While completing these tasks, participants will speak their thoughts out loud so you understand the thought process and reasoning behind their actions. An example of a task is "Imagine you are thinking about buying a Bluetooth headset, use Google to do the research you normally would" or "After using this webpage, what are 3 words that describe how you feel about this company?".

Below is a quick overview of the different types of tasks available. If you would like more in depth information on the various task types, please see the Tasks Overview help center article. Writing Great Tasks is also a great article to help you strengthen your task writing skills.
A blank Task is a free form text field that allows you to fill in any task or question you'd like a participant to answer or complete. This provides the most flexibility and the least predetermined parameters of any of the task types.
Five Second Task
This function will show your indicated URL to our participants for 5 seconds only. Afterwards, we'll ask them three questions to recall their impressions and understanding of the page. Participants are asked:
- What do you remember?
- What can you do on this site?
- Who's this site for?
Once the test participant has answered the three questions, they'll see the indicated URL again. The five-second test will always be the first task.
Note: The five-second task is only available on Website tests sent to the UserTesting panel.
These questions prompt the participants to provide a spoken answer which correlates with where a participant is at in the study. Since they're recorded, you can skip directly to the answer in the video. They make great clips for your highlight reel!
To add a verbal response question to your study, select Verbal Response, then type in your question.
If you can't think of a task, or just need some inspiration, you can draw from our task bank of common and popular tasks. To choose from a list of our most popular tasks, select Popular Tasks.
Next, choose from the list of popular tasks and select Add Task to add that task to your study.
We also offer a variety of metrics-based questions, such as Multiple Choice questions, a Ratings Scale or responses in writing via the Written Response. These answers are available via the Excel export which can help with faster and easier analysis. Metrics are available in certain plans, please reach out to the Support team if you don’t have access to the Metrics feature.
Notes about tasks:
- There is no limit to the number of tasks that can be in a study; (however, studies should take 15 to 20 minutes to complete. Think about how long you expect participants to spend on each task and limit the number of tasks appropriately.)
- Tasks should not require a participant to provide any personally identifying information (PII), here’s an article to find out more about PII.
