While viewing the video recording of a study, you may come across key pieces of feedback that you want to isolate and share. Or you may want to aggregate these shortened clips into a curated video, so that your team can easily view common responses or speed through essential feedback.
UserTesting makes it easy to identify highlights in a video and to create video clips and share them with others. Here are some tips on how to do it:
You can manually type notes directly within the video player to capture your thoughts, and document important issues or findings while reviewing a video. The notes will be captured along with a time stamp, which you can click to jump to that specific section of the video.

To begin making notes, open a video in your dashboard. Then select the Notes & Clips view from the dropdown menu to the right of the video at the top of the page. Start playing the video. To create a new note, type in the box labeled “Start typing a #tag and/or note here.” Alternatively, you can press the 'n' key on your keyboard as a shortcut.
By default, playback will pause while you type a note. To change the settings for playback when editing a note, click the keyboard icon underneath the video.
You can easily create clips from your video. These video clips can be shared as is, or multiple clips can be compiled into a highlight reel for sharing with others.
To begin, play the video.
To get a clip with just one step, simply click the Clip button underneath the video. This captures the previous and current phrase spoken by the participant. A transcript of what was said will automatically appear in the notes.
To customize your own start time, end time, and note you can type “c” on your keyboard or check the “Make Clip” checkbox in the top right corner of the Note field.
Clips default to 30 seconds long in the clip editor. However, clip start and end points will be displayed in the timeline at the bottom of the video. Click and drag the endpoints to change them. You can also select one of the endpoints and then use the left or right arrow keys to fine tune them. Or if you prefer, you can type the start or end times directly into the time fields.
When you're happy with the clip, click Save.
Similar to taking notes, you can create tags for clips to stay organized and to more quickly find them later, such as when making a highlight reel. Tags also appear in the Excel export for notes and clips.
You can make tags in a similar way to other platforms: by using the hashtag character. For example if you type “#issue” this creates a tag for that clip. Tags must not have spaces, but may include hyphens or underscores to separate words.
A highlight reel is a curation of any clips you've created. Once you have gone through and made clips from the original recording, you can make a highlight reel by selecting Highlight Reels from your UserTesting dashboard.
This tab will contain all your existing highlight reels and you can create new highlight reels by selecting Create a Highlight Reel.
Your clips will be listed on the left. Search for clips by tag, keyword, or study title. You can also use the filter to pinpoint the important clips you are looking for.
Then simply select and drag your desired clips to create your highlight reel. You can preview or share your Highlight Reel via email or link by using the buttons in the top right corner.
