Using Templates

While you can run UserTesting studies for a wide spectrum of objectives, there are some studies that are more commonly used or needed.

The UserTesting team authored a series of templates based on popular and frequently used objectives and desired outcomes across your product and campaign development cycle. Employing customer experience best practices, these templates help you save time by quickly and effortlessly securing fast results in key focus areas.

You can insert a template when creating a new study with just one click.

How it works

When creating a new study, select New then Create from template from the dropdown.


Next, you'll see several tabs of template categories. Choose a tab, then scroll down and select the website or app option that meets your needs. The UserTesting Templates tab contains a variety of our best templates ready for your use, for mobile and desktop testing. 


If your members of your team have saved any test plans, you'll find those under the Team Templates.


As you would for any type of study, you should select:

  • The number of participants you are seeking for this study.
  • The desired demographics, or characteristics, of the test participants.
  • The devices and operating system that you want the participants to use.

Note: Website study templates default to 'desktop' and 'any' operating system, and app studies default to 'iPhone.' If your study requires testing on a specific device type or operating system, be sure to adjust it here.

Then click the “Select Tasks” button to proceed. On the next screen, you’ll notice that your study will already have related tasks and questions included.

These tasks and questions in templates are just a starting point. You can easily revise, remove, or add new tasks and questions. Specifically, you’ll need to define the starting URL or app you'd like participants to use.


You’ll also need to adjust any content within brackets to customize the tasks.


After you have edited the tasks in your study, you should click on “Review Order” at the bottom of the screen. You can click on “Test Details” to review tasks and questions, to ensure that you’ve adequately customized your study. You can also preview the test using the “Preview Test” button, which allows you to see what a test participant will experience when they are engaging with your study.

As a best practice, it is advisable to conduct a dry run of your study to ensure you're gathering the insights you need. This means running the test fully at least once and ensuring that the insights you are receiving meet your needs. This gives you the opportunity to adjust your study before launching it to a larger number of participants.
