The following steps will help you effectively launch a desktop study.
Step 1. Log in to your dashboard
Log in to your dashboard.
Step 2. Create a new study
Select the New dropdown from your dashboard, then select Test to create a brand new study.
You can also create a new Test from template as well. You can learn more about templates here.
Step 3. Select the type of study you'd like to conduct
For this example, we'll be conducting a recorded test.
You can study just about anything with UserTesting. In this case, we want to study a website, so select Test a website.
Step 4. Choose how you'd like to recruit your participants
You have the option of utilizing UserTesting's panel of over 1 million participants or inviting your own using My Recruit. In this example, we'll select the UserTesting panel.

Step 5. Choose your target audience
Select the number of participants you'd like for your study and the devices they should use. Next, choose your target audience by adjusting the demographic fields. Read more about choosing a target audience here.
For a desktop study, select computer for the device.
Note: Only the participants on our panel who meet your demographics and device specifications will be able to view your study.
You can further customize your demographics with the help of screener questions. These allow you to ask participants questions to see if they fit your specific demographics. This is an optional feature you can use if the demographic fields aren't specific enough for your target audience. Learn more about screeners here.
Step 5. Starting URL and instructions
Enter the URL where you'd like your participants to start and an introduction to the test scenario. Participants will be automatically directed to the URL you provide at the beginning of the study. The scenario will help participants know what mindset they should have during their study. Pro tip: Anything that can be hosted online can be studied. Consider testing a prototype design from a prototyping platform. Studies can be run on a competitor, a Google search, or even a PDF file.
Step 6. Select tasks
Create the questions and tasks you'd like participants to complete during your study. You can also refer to our bank of popular tasks if you're not sure what tasks or questions to use.
Step 7. Written questions
After participants finish recording their session, they'll see a pop-up questionnaire with one to four questions that require a written response. You can use the pre-populated questions that are included in every study or you can replace them with your own.
Step 8. Review and launch your study
Review your study details before launching your study. Ensure that you have the correct URL listed and that your tasks and questions flow in a logical order.
