We recommend a sample size of five participants per segment, per study. We typically find that the majority of usability issues and insights are found with the first five participants of a study.

Even if you include a screener question in your study plan, use the first task to have the participant explain who they are. This is an easy method for validating that a participant is the right fit for your study.
- Task 1: In the screener question you mentioned you were [insert specific example]. Please take a moment to tell us about [insert specific example].
- Avoiding leading questions
- If you have access to Customer Experience Analytics, use the rating scale questions. They’ll help you quickly get quantitative data
- Use “why” and “how” questions
- If you need to emphasize something in a question or task, try these shortcuts to format emphasis like bolding or italicizing
- Your video will be 15-20 minutes, so include enough questions for that amount of time
- If you’d like to include multiple questions or follow-ups within one screen, use letters to separate them out, for example:
- Tell us about [insert specific example]
- a. [question 1]
- b. [question 2]

Run one session first, then scale to a larger group of participants
We recommend that you launch one study first when starting a new study.
Dry runs help to ensure that all assets included in the study work properly, all tasks are made clear to participants and that you get the desired feedback from the study. Once you review your dry run video you can move forward with releasing the study or revising it.
You can launch the same study by adding more participants:

You can save time by using the Create similar test option from the drop down menu of a study you'd like to replicate. Once you copy the study, you can make any changes necessary, then launch it to a new set of participants. Please note: If you need to change a website study to an app study, you'll have to create a new study.
By creating a draft of a study, you can edit, finish, or launch it at a later time. Drafts are automatically saved as you edit your test plan. You can also create drafts to have colleagues review a study before launching it.
You can access drafts from your dashboard under the Drafts Only filter.
From there, you can Share your test plan with colleagues or Notify (via Slack integration or e-mail) team members about the results.
Pro tip: Give the study a descriptive title so you can easily find it in your drafts. Avoid editing the same draft in multiple tabs simultaneously as this may result in a failure to save the desired changes.
Watch videos in high-speed
The videos are easily the most fun part of gathering human insights. But watching every single video can be time-consuming and your entire team may not have the bandwidth to comb through each and every one.
Fortunately, you can watch your videos up to 3x speed to help you pick out memorable insights even faster. Just select 1x at the bottom of your video player and select the speed you'd like to use.
