InVision with UserTesting

At UserTesting, we believe bringing users into the design process early and often is critical to creating great experiences. Prototyping tools enable designers, researchers, and product managers to quickly and efficiently put concepts in front of users, incorporating user feedback at every design junction.

InVision, the cloud-based prototyping and design collaboration platform, is a favorite of UserTesting and of our customers. We love InVision so much that we recently launched a partnership to provide InVision customers with introductory 5-minute micro-tests to showcase the potential of user feedback throughout the design process.

This guide focuses on helping current customers of both UserTesting and InVision go beyond 5-minute micro-tests to get the most out of both services together. Harness the full power of UserTesting with specific target audiences, fully customized tasks and questions, and full test length.

InVision share settings

To get started, go to InVision and locate the prototype that needs feedback. To the upper right of your web or app prototype, locate the “SHARE” button (not the user test button).

Once you click Share, you’ll be presented with the “Invite people to project” screen. Click on “Link Settings” on the bottom right of the screen to access the “Share Prototype” screen. Right above the “COPY” button on that screen, click “More Options” to expand the settings.


You should see an expanded set of sharing settings for your prototype’s URL.

To help get the best feedback and clearly share your design vision, we recommend disabling all settings other than:

  • Hotspots enabled (on)
  • Prevent hotspot hinting (optional - recommended on)

The configuration enables users to navigate between the screens through your hotspots but removes potentially distracting elements like the comments and all screens navigation interface.


  • If you think it’s necessary to have hotspot hinting, feel free to leave the “Prevent hotspot hinting” function off.
  • ​​If you have a prototype without hotspots, but still want to obtain feedback from users, turn on “Allow access to all screens in prototype” and disable everything else. With this setup, users will be able to navigate between the prototype screens by clicking the right side (to go to forward) or left side (to go backward) of each prototype screen.​

Once you have your settings ready, hit “COPY” and/or “Open in a new window” to have the share URL handy to input into UserTesting.

UserTesting setup

With your InVision share URL in hand, you’re ready to go to UserTesting to setup your test.

In the UserTesting dashboard, select “Create a test”.

From there, select “Test a Prototype” at the test type selection screen.

At the “Choose Your Target Audience” screen, remember to set the appropriate device for your InVision prototype.

For the device, select Smartphone and then select the appropriate Operating System.

Finish setting up your demographics and screener questions as necessary. Then, move to the “Select Tasks” part of test setup.

Within “Starting Instructions,” paste in the InVision prototype URL into the “Prototype URL (where users start the test)” field.

Next, think about your Introduction. We recommend tailoring your Introduction a bit more for your prototype by reminding the participant that some elements of your prototype may not be fully functional.

Here is a good reference Introduction for you to use and edit:

“You will be using a prototype: a design that’s not completely finished yet. If something does not work as you expected, explain what you expected to happen and move on.”

Once your InVision URL and Introduction are setup, proceed to drafting your tasks and questions as you would normally.

Once you hit “Start Testing,” you’ll be on your way to getting user feedback and improving your designs!
